Loretta's Countdown to 60

Aging on my terms - Daily musings in 500 words or so

Insta-Friends

Since joining Instagram just over a year ago, I’ve gained about 6,700 followers. While that is pretty cool, I’ve discovered that among those followers there are a vast number of women over 50 who have become my “Insta-Friends”.

I tagged along with John this week and joined him on the road for his job. We drove to Scottsdale on Monday and stayed in a very nice “Villa” at the Scottsdale Hilton. This place was actually bigger than our apartment.

It was fun to get away, and I decided since we were going to be there until Wednesday morning, I’d see if a few of my Scottsdale Insta-friends could meet up. When John and I were both online dating we used to say, “It’s all make-believe until you meet in person.”

So Tuesday morning, I was delighted when Gala of @galas_everything, could join me for coffee. From the minute we met, it was like chatting with an old friend and our conversation was so stimulating.

I thoroughly loved hearing her story and laughing together. She posted on her Instagram about it and summed it up perfectly.

“As I was sitting across from her and chatting away, I couldn’t help thinking how is it possible that these two strangers who never met before and live in different states can have long talks and so much in common.

And then I thought…if we were in our 20s would this coffee chat be as easy-going, as exciting? Would we have much to share that unites us from the first few words?

…when you are in your 50s you have been through a lot. And most likely, so has the woman who sits across from you.

…there is a whole life that brings you together, no matter where you are from or where you live, what your background or social status.

It’s called midlife.

Yesterday, I met a new friend. And her name is Loretta”

Later in the day I met another Insta-Friend, Becca of @theyogadarling. We immediately had a connection and both felt that we had found a true friend in the other. Our stories of struggle and raising children are similar and I so love her attitude about life and health.

On Wednesday morning, before we left Scottsdale, I met up with Lisa of @thefulfilledpharmacist for some coffee and breakfast. Lisa and I have chatted on the phone before, but this was our first face to face meeting.

What a pleasure it was to chat with her and learn about her life and the book she wrote with her sister, Tiny Life Changes. She even had an autographed copy of her book to gift me.

I left Scottsdale knowing I have three new women in my life I’ll call friends.

Thursday evening we joined six other Instagram friends for a photo shoot with Courtney Paige Ray (@courtneypaigeray) and some lively conversation over dinner together. It was a hoot! I loved every minute of it and so enjoyed seeing these fantastic women face to face.

Catherine from @catherinegraceo arranged for us all to meet at the Malibu Pier. I got to see Barbie again (@barbieholmes), and meet: Lesley (@lesleywolman), Jonilyn (@jonilynbrown), Michelle (@aging.gracefully), and Jacqueline (@yellowbrickrunway).

setting up a shot

Wow, talk about a fun group of women. We had a blast, and I now have a bigger circle of friends.

Insta-friend is sort of a funny thing to call them, but it works because we became instant friends after meeting each other in person.

I hope you join me on Instagram and also check out my new friends too.
