Loretta's Countdown to 60

Aging on my terms - Daily musings in 500 words or so

The Social Media Rabbit Hole

I was going to write about my dog, Bella, but instead just spent the last several hours cleaning up my personal Facebook page. And I’m nowhere close to being done. I fell into the social media rabbit hole.

When I started my blog just over a year ago, I had about 200 Facebook friends. And I thought that was a lot.

Today I have over 700, and I don’t know most of them.

Since I’ve joined several groups, I get a lot of friend requests. Most are from very nice women who are also in these groups, so I accepted their requests and before I knew it, I have more friends I don’t know than friends I do.

Another friend I met through a group told me she sorted out the mess by creating two different Facebook pages, so I decided to do that today. And I had no idea just what I chore this was going to be.

I am Loretta Sayers Gavin on my Facebook page I’ve had since 2009. That is my personal page where my family and old friends from High School and my very close friends are.

I created a new one for Loretta Sayers for all of my social media groups and virtual friends. So, just in case you are wondering, no I am not getting a divorce.

John and I are doing great – and I’ll share more on that later.

It wasn’t too hard moving all of my groups over to the new Loretta Sayers page, but oh man, I had absolutely NO idea just how many pages I was following. I spent hours unfollowing about 500. And I’m not done.

I was following pages that I never remember even seeing before. Not sure how this happened, but they were all there. I’m slowing whittling them down to the actual ones I want to follow.

And then I’ll transfer them to my new public page, Loretta Sayers.

Is this confusing?

Yes, yes it is. But hopefully I get it all sorted out and I can get back to actually writing. I have a wonderful story to write about my dog, Bella. My experience with carcinoma is in queue and I’ve got some fun things to share about me and John.

But for now, my arm is so tired from holding it at my laptop hitting “unfollow” and I am ready to just relax and call it a day.

Until tomorrow…

I don’t have near the number you do, but I’ve been dreading a similar task.. I have heard that we can ‘divide’ our friends list up into different sections (close friends and family/ acquainances/ business followers/ general public) and then mark each post accordingly as to who gets to see it. I need to do this.. but I’m not sure how long it will take me to wrap my brain around it.. I just know nearly all the social media stuff I do takes longer than I hope it will. It does help when I get into a routine, but it seems so easy to fall out of one.. Glad to know it’s not just me.

Hi Stephanie…I had all of my online friends listed as acquaintances, and had unfollowed them, but then I never see their posts either. So I figured this was a better solution. Now when I am “working” I can like and see their posts, but when I’m “off” I can go spend time looking at close friends and family’s posts.

I wish I would have done this from the start!!

Excellent point about being able to divide work time and personal time. I have been wondering how to do that.. thanks for sharing!

  2. I’m intrigued by this straybut the whole process sounds time consuming. I’ll be interested to see how it works for you, then I might give it a try. Good luck! You can be my guinea pig. 😘

I dedicated several hours to it yesterday, and I’ve already seen a huge difference! I wish I would have done this from the beginning. I also want to be sure my business name is Loretta Sayers, so this helps with that too.

      Thanks Andy!

  3. Yikes! MY head is spinning just thinking about making those changes, so I can imagine yours is!
Looking forward to your Bella story, skin story and more about you and John!

Thank you Melanie…you are the friend I mentioned!! Great idea, only wish I would have done this from the beginning.

  5. Sounds like a great idea. I have stopped accepting friend requests, as I realise I am heading the same way, though on a smaller scale. Some day I will do what you have done.

It is a chore, Hilda. I wish I would have done this a year ago. I am already so much happier I did this, however. I am seeing post from all the fun women I follow on my new page and seeing my old friends on my original page.

  6. Great idea… I need to consider this 🙂 But it does sound like so much work 🙂

  7. Separating family and friends from business and campaigns is a blessing.

That was the smartest decision I made! I’m so much happier and actually have more time for each!
