Aging on my terms - Daily musings in 500 words or so

Writing can be hazardous to your health

I am sorry I haven’t shared a blog post for a week now, but there is a reason why.

My dog ate it!

No that’s not the truth. I am not having writer’s block and it’s not that I don’t have more to share either. Here is the deal, I hurt myself writing.

Yep, I am not joking.

I have a MacBook Pro and for the most part, I love it. It is fast and does everything I ask of it. Everything was fine until the day I sat down and wrote several chapters of my new book…in one sitting.

Ever since then, I have been in pain. Here’s why: MacBook Pro is a powerful little laptop with an enormous design flaw. For some reason, the designers did not take into account the human hand, which is kind of a big deal if you ask me.

Right where I rest my wrists and palms rest there is a very sharp edge.

So after writing about 10,000 words that day, I was in a lot of pain. Now after about one minute of typing, I can no longer stand it. I wasn’t sure what to do and thought I just needed to rest my hands for a few days.

But they still hurt.

Ouch…

We went shopping for a new laptop last weekend, but we did not find anything I like better than mine. I have a wireless keyboard and thought that would solve the problem, but my computer screen is too far away for me to see when I use it.

Now I can’t see the screen very well…

So I have been trying to figure out what to do about my laptop. I even went online to see if anyone has come out with some sort of pad to soften the sharp edge.

They haven’t.

Then I had a brilliant idea. Okay, it wasn’t my idea but at least I was smart enough to ask my kid what to do. He said, “Get a bigger monitor, Ma.”

Duh!

After searching Craigslist for like 20 seconds John found a monitor for $30. Problem solved.

Much better!

I guess I need to get back to work now that my hands can type again. I can’t wait to share the next part of my story with you.

(Here’s a hint: wedding bells)

Amy, you need this set up! You can sit with your leg up and recover and still type!

      And, thank you! Xxx

  2. Once I complete my office, I am getting a bigger screen too. I have 2 large ones at work so I am spoiled by them.

Glad you are back at it!!

      Thank you Kim!
I’m glad I figured out a solution…my hands are still so sore!

  3. I ran into a similar problem a while back. But in my case, it was my desk. It was the wrong height, wrong lay out, wrong everything. A trip to Staples and a WRITING desk with a customized adjustable chair made a world of difference. Well, that and Ghirardelli’s. Glad you’re feeling better!

Ooh, I want a writing desk! I usually sit on the sofa because of exactly what you are saying. Wrong everything at my desk.

And smart move to add Ghiradelli’s – always an excellent cure!

  4. Oh dear…hope that it improves now.

Thank you Hilda. I’m hoping it does too. I can’t write if my hands are in pain!

  5. Yes! You have found the sweet spot for your wrists! My keyboard tray adjusts so it sits down on my lap practically. Then my desk chair leans back, a like lumbar pillow, and ahhhh. Wrists sitting on a hard surface for hours hurts!

I have that problem at work and at home. I also have a desktop but that doesn’t really solve the issue.

After seeing this I am going to take my keyboard and plug it into my TV sit on the couch and write!

Hours on these things sure can hurt! I’m enjoying my new setup, Shelly!
